Top security board vows continued support to Syria’s unity

Türkiye’s top security council has vowed that its support for reinforcing the political unity and territorial integrity of Syria will continue as Damascus succeeded to impose its authority in the previously YPG-controlled areas in the eastern Euphrates.

The National Security Council (MGK) made its first bi-annual meeting on Jan. 28, under the leadership of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and with the participation of senior civilian and military officials.

One of the key issues discussed at the MGK was Syria, in the context of the Jan. 18 agreement between the Syrian government and YPG, which resulted in the latter’s withdrawal from the areas it has been controlling since the civil war.

Türkiye will continue to lend strong support to Syria’s efforts to maintain its sovereignty, territorial integrity, unitary structure and political unity, the MGK said, while vowing that it will continue its cooperation with Damascus for augmenting the security, comfort and stability of the Syrian people.

At the MGK, efforts to fully eliminate terror problem through the terror-free Türkiye project have also been raised. The members of the board evaluated the recent achievements to this end and expressed their determination to further advance it.

On Gaza, the MGK further confirmed that it is ready to assume all responsibilities with its partners to rebuild Gaza and establish lasting peace. It also expressed Türkiye's determination in its efforts to deliver comprehensive humanitarian aid to the region, noting that the country is already one of the founding members of international mechanisms established to resolve the Gaza issue.

Türkiye’s support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia was underlined in the statement, adding that Ankara will continue to fulfill the requirements of brotherhood in the Somali people’s fight against terrorist organizations.

The current situation in the Russia–Ukraine war was also discussed during the meeting, the board said.

It was stressed that all parties must act responsibly to ensure that the consequences of the war do not jeopardize the stability sought to be preserved in the Black Sea Türkiye will continue its efforts to end the war, which is gradually increasing regional and global risks, and to rapidly determine a lasting peace, it added.

Türkiye will continue its multidimensional efforts with determination in 2026 to preserve peace and establish stability across various conflict and crisis regions spanning from its immediate neighborhood to Asia, Africa and Europe, it concluded.
